"... the Irish identity is as much a product of those who left our shores as those who stayed at home” .
Conor Lenihan, Minister for Integration, 2008

 Boston, Massachusetts USA

Boston might well be regarded as the capital of Irish America. As a percentage of the population, Massachusetts is the most Irish state, with about a quarter of the population claiming Irish descent. New England remains the most Irish-American part of the country, with New Hampshire contributing a good portion of its population.

Other cities in America with a large Irish population are Philadelphia, New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco.

Interestingly, because of its history as a mining center, Butte, Montana, is also one of the country's most thoroughly Irish-American cities. Many of the miners from the Beara Peninsula, who had worked in the copper mines in Allihes in southwest Cork, traveled to Butte for work in the mines.

There are large populations of Irish Americans in the South, as well, particularly in Charleston (South Carolina) and New Orleans (Louisiana) and also in Washington, DC, and the states of Delaware and Florida.

Boston is My Home Town

Massachusetts is one of the smallest states in the nation and so it's no surprise that all its residents can identify with the phrase "Boston is my home town." In fact, that hometown identity is often extended to the far reaches of New England.

The New England states on the east coast of America are, north to south, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Connecticut, in itself a highly populated state, is often more closely associated with New York in identity, as it shares a border and there are many commuters from Connecticut who work in New York City.

Emigrants from Ireland settled in many of the surrounding suburbs of Boston. They went where family was or where the jobs were. In the early days, the jobs were mostly low-skilled, low-paying jobs; the men often worked in factories or in construction, and the women most often worked as maids to wealthy families. Some of those transplants from Ireland ended up in the City of Lynn, a bustling city along the North Shore, just a short train ride from Boston itself. A little further out on the tracks are the seacoast towns of Swampscott and Marblehead and the historic City of Salem.

Boston Proper and Improper

'There's more to Boston than Boston. Aside from Boston's neighborhoods like Beacon Hill, The Back Bay, The North End, Southie, and Roxbury, Allston, and Brighton, which are all part of the City of Boston, across the river there is Cambridge and the well-known Harvard Square. Lynn, Lynn, the City of ...

The early days of Lynn were something to marvel at. There was plenty of work for those who wanted it. The shoe factories were in their heyday. The General Electric company provided steady employment and decent wages for those with the right skills or the right connections. There was a magnificent library and churches for every ethnicity.

Marblehead

From Lynn, through the coastal town of Swampscott, lies the picturesque town of Marblehead, whose harbors are filled with sailboats and other boats in the summertime. A former fishing village and summer vacation spot for the wealthy Bostonians, it is now one of the many "bedroom" communities for the commuters to Boston. It is, however, part of a healthy and thriving business community in the North Shore.

Aside from it's sailboats and scenery, Marblehead is proud of its history and some of its famous citizens who helped to shape the America we know today.

The Marblehead Museum and Historical Society shares the story of General John Glover in Wicked Local (Eastern Massachusetts towns publication), an enterprising shoemaker in the mid-1700's, who led Marblehead’s “fishermen” in critical military maneuvers of the Revolutionary War.

Cape Cod ~ a Massachusetts Treasure

A treasured area of Massachusetts, Cape Cod is only about 75 miles south and east of Boston, jutting out into the cold Atlantic on one side with the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico on the other side. It has been a popular retirement spot for Massachusetts residents for years, with a more relaxed lifestyle than the hectic cities and towns around Boston.
